Abstract: Protecting intellectual property need not be complicated. Wendy will walk you through highlights of the entire process of building a patent portfolio, covering key
discussion points such as:
- Doing your own literature searches prior to applying for a patent
- Fundamentals of patent drafting
- Timing and claim strategy
- Country selection
- Best practices for arguing before the Patent Office to secure allowance of broadest claims
- Strategies for extending patent life (e.g., file continuations and/or divisional patent applications, risk of double patenting)
- Best practices for invention mining
- Budgeting and keeping costs in check
- Determining when to maintain trade secrets rather than pursue patent protection
